Indicator test papers are used to determine if something is an acid or a base; certain test papers are used to detect presence of a specific chemical compound or group of compounds.

The following indicator test papers are available in the dropdown option above:

    • Blue Litmus - Turns red under acidic conditions
    • Red Litmus - Turns blue under basic conditions
    • Neutral Litmus - Turns red under acidic and blue under basic conditions
    • Curcumin - The normally yellow compound changes to red under basic conditions
    • Phenolphthalein - Turns a bright red under basic conditions
    • Congo Red - Blue below pH 3.0; brilliant red above pH 5.2
    • Thymol Blue - Changes from blue to yellow below pH ~8.0; then from yellow to red below pH ~2.5
    • Phenol Red - Yellow below pH 6.8; red in pH range 6.8 to 8.2; bright pink (fuchsia) color above pH 8.2
    • Methyl Orange - In an acidic medium, methyl orange turns red, while in a basic medium, it turns yellow
    • Starch Potassium Iodide - Detects peroxides and other oxidizing agents; Turns blue/purple color, darkens as concentration increases
    • Cobalt Chloride - Detects the presence of moisture; Will turn from blue to a light pink if water is present

Indicator test papers are supplied in stoppered vials of 100 strips.

How to use:

  1. Remove one test paper from the vial, being careful not to touch the strip anywhere other than where you grasp it.
  2. Dip the strip into the solution to be tested for 1-2 seconds.
  3. Read the strip.

NOTE: The solution must be water-based.
