With these neon lamps students can detect the presence of static charges on friction rods and cloths after charging by friction. The lamp glows or flashes bright orange in the presence of static charges. Essentially, it acts as a very sensitive electroscope, responding to only a few tens of volts.
Note: If your environment is too bright, it would be recommended to dim the lights slightly when detecting static charges with these neon lamps.
