An effective way to explain Archimedes' principle to every student, and with a minimum of advance equipment preparation by the teacher. It consists of a demonstration metal spring scale (newton and gram calibrated), a bucket fitted with a handle at top and hook at bottom, an opaque nylon plummet which just fits inside the bucket and to which it may be attached by a ring, and a plastic overflow can large enough that the plummet can be completely submerged in it without touching the bottom and in which the plummet can be clearly seen by the class. Required, but not included: retort stand for clamping the spring scale and small beaker for collecting the displaced water .
