Description
Used to demonstrate how a submarine dives and surfaces. Consists of a transparent plastic sphere with a nut in the bottom and small steel weight, a length of silicone hose, and a plastic syringe. When the diving bell is placed in a tall cylinder with water, extracting the air out of the bell with the syringe causes the bell to sink because water enters the bell through the nut in the bottom. Return the extracted volume of air back into the bell and it will surface. Because the syringe is graduated, this model also allows for quantitative testing of the Archimedes' principle.
