Product Overview

The distinction between mass and weight force becomes clear to the student who performs this fundamental laboratory experiment. It shows how mass can be measured independently of the earth’s gravitational force.
A small platform on which objects are to be placed is free to oscillate in a horizontal plane under the restoring force of two horizontal, non-sagging, spring steel blades. The device is first calibrated by determining the vibration frequency for different platform loads with a stopwatch. The plot of the square of the period versus mass gives a straight line. An “unknown” mass, included, can be suspended in the central hole of the platform by a long cord to show whether gravitational force influences the frequency. The balance is about 32 cm long and may be held in a C clamp. With instructions.
Required accessories (not included) are the C clamp, stopwatch, and ring stand or other apparatus to suspend unknown mass cylinder.
