Product Overview
Used to demonstrate heating by friction, mechanical equivalent of heat, energy conversion, etc. Consists of a hollow brass tube with a tightly fitting rubber stopper, mounted on a table clamp, and a length of poly rope.
In use, a few milliliters of alcohol is placed in the tube and the tube is corked. The included rope is looped around the tube as shown in the second photo. Friction is applied to the tube under tension by first pulling on one end of the rope and then the other in a swift back-and-forth motion continuously until the heat generated by friction makes alcohol inside the tube boil and the resulting vapor pressure shoots the cork out explosively.
