Rekenreks allow for the tactile manipulation and visualization of 5 and 10 as whole-number anchors, and demonstrates the decomposition of larger numbers, such as 7, to be seen as two parts, such as 5 + 2. A 20-Bead Rekenrek helps students to develop strategies for the operations of addition and subtraction early on to help build a conceptual foundation and mental math skills.
