Product Overview
The IEC “Magic” Radioactive Source is a microprocessor-controlled simulator designed for classroom use where real radioactive materials are not permitted. It offers a safe, engaging, and scientifically valid alternative for teaching the principles of radioactive decay and half-life—without the regulatory constraints of actual sources.
This self-contained, interactive instrument mimics real radioactive behavior, allowing students to visualize and analyze decay processes with ease. It’s especially effective for conducting experiments that are otherwise time-consuming or conceptually difficult using conventional radioactive materials.
Simulated Source Modes:
-
Long Half-Life Simulation:
The display mimics a Geiger counter by showing random radiation counts within realistic upper and lower bounds, simulating background and source-based radiation at a fixed distance. These simulated count values are useful for probability studies and statistical analysis exercises. -
Short Half-Life Simulation:
Begins with a simulated 1.000 × 10²⁰ radioactive particles. The count decreases over time, replicating a decaying source. The decay continues until a single final particle remains—whose disappearance occurs unpredictably, illustrating the probabilistic nature of radioactive decay. Elapsed time is displayed (minutes and seconds) to facilitate graphing and exploration of half-life concepts. The source can be easily reset at any point with a button press.
