Product Overview
The Rotating Platform Set provides an engaging, hands-on way for students to explore key physics concepts including conservation of angular momentum, centrifugal force, and gyroscopic precession. Designed for use in demonstrations where controlled rotation is essential, this platform also serves as a stable base for a variety of rotational experiments.
The platform is constructed from two 40 cm diameter MDF discs, separated by a ball race bearing for smooth rotation. Six anti-slip patches on the surface ensure safe use. It can support balanced loads up to 100 kg and is particularly effective for illustrating the conservation of angular momentum.
Platform weight: 5 kg
Important Safety Notes:
-
Always stand with both feet on the platform, one on each side of the center.
-
For optimal performance, ensure the bearing lubricant is at room temperature.
-
Use caution when standing on or rotating with the platform.
Included Accessories
Bicycle Wheel Gyroscope
This durable gyroscope features a 50 cm diameter molded plastic bicycle wheel mounted on ball bearings. It has sturdy handles at each end of the axle and a heavy inner-tube rubber tire around the rim. A simple hand spin is sufficient to demonstrate gyroscopic effects such as:
-
Horizontal axis suspension
-
Gyroscopic resistance to directional change
-
Unexpected turning effects when walking and suddenly changing direction
Used with the rotating platform, it powerfully demonstrates how angular momentum affects motion—enabling a person to rotate themselves without external force.
Liquid Accelerometer
This transparent, hollow plastic cell—mounted on a stable wooden base—visually demonstrates acceleration. When partially filled with colored water and placed on a rotating platform or dynamic cart, the liquid's surface reacts to acceleration:
-
Remains horizontal when at rest or in uniform motion
-
Tilts when the base accelerates or decelerates
The accelerometer can be used with or without its base and comes with hook-and-loop tape for secure attachment to the rotating platform.
