Product Overview

Study resonance in a column of air and measure the speed of sound. When a vibrating tuning fork is held with its tines above the tube, the length of the tube can be adjusted to produce resonance. If a fork of suitable frequency is used, several depths will be found which will produce resonance, the lengths of the tube being 1/4, 3/4, or 5/4 of a wavelength. An approximate value for the speed of sound in air can be calculated.

What's included:

  • Telescopic, friction fit hollow aluminum tubes of variable combined length (32 cm to 60 cm), one end of the column sealed with a plastic removable plug. If wanted, plug can be removed to study open column resonance.
  • Tuning fork, best quality tone alloy aluminum to give vibrations of higher amplitude, 1024 Hz.
  • Rubber mallet (tuning fork activator) to strike the tuning fork to obtain strong vibrations with minimum energy in unwanted overtones.
  • Tape measure, 2m, to measure the resonance column depth.
