For demonstrating thermal expansion of metals with application of heat. It consists of a brass ball 25 mm in diameter and a brass ring, each mounted on a rod with a wooden handle. When both ball and ring are at room temperature the ball passes easily through the ring. If the ball is held in the flame of the Bunsen burner or alcohol burner and then brought up to the ring, the ball will not pass through. If both the ring and ball are heated simultaneously, then the ball will pass through the ring easily. Overall length, 30 cm.
